L'histoire nous est racontée dans un numéro de la revue Art et Décoration daté de janvier 1927 : ""C'est de l'esprit de révolte, c'est d'une volonté de réaction que naquit le premier papier peint dessiné par René Gabriel. Et l'un des premiers, dans la petite chambre qu'il occupait rue de Bourgogne, en 1916, le tout jeune artiste commença, sans argent, sans soutien, sans organisation ni connaissance commerciale, de dessiner et d'imprimer un premier papier peint, puis un second, puis un troisième. La Foire de Paris allait ouvrir ses portes. René Gabriel y tient boutique. Et tout de suite, cela plaît. Il y a de la demande." Il se réinvente aussi une histoire, celle d'un singulier personnage exerçant le travail de dominotier, un métier oublié, tiré d'un passé "proto-industriel" qu'il souhaite revitaliser.
